Comments: Hi Sandy, had a meeting yesterday with Andrew Johnston of the South Australian Health Commission, Radiation Protection Branch. He told me about your mailing list on radiation/health physics and gave me a printout of one. I have begun working in the area of environmental impact assessment, and (from a professional background in chemistry and metallurgy) have begun to learn more about radiation hazards/health physics aspects of mining/processing low level radioactive ores such as uranium and mineral sands. I am webmaster/editor of the Australian Rare Earth Newsletter www.ozemail.com.au/~marcusr/aren published and supported by the Australian Mineral Foundation. On the AREN web site you will find a link to an international rare earth conference to be held in Western Australian at the end of this month. The conference has a section on the medical uses of rare earths, including rare earth radionuclides. Comments: I've been here before......but don't check it often. I wish they would let you attend the CRCPD meetings. But the one in Mesa will probably be my last, since I am retiring on October 6 or before. Sorry to hear about your father. If like me, you lost your best friend! As time passes the sorrow will lessen, but it won't go completely away.

Comments: HI Sandy I am the supervisor over TVA's TLD processing Lab. We are currently running 4 Panasonic 710 readers and process approx. 8000 TLD's quarterly. We set up our readers using (routine set-ups) specific TLDs for Heating, and multi-pt Calibrations and verify the setup with our SPC-TLDs daily. We are looking for information on Satistical Process Control methods for Panasonic UD-710 readers. We have been using SPC-expert to trend/control our process but the process has so many variables it is basically useless. The TLDs used for this wear out over a period of time (usually 100-200 irradiations) causing our control limits to be in a constant state of flux. What do you currently use to "control" you process? What do you trend? We appreciate your input.

Comments: One of my employees forwarded the article on Greenpeace in France, and I double-clicked on the link. That's how I got here. We have "corresponded" before, and I believe my son has even talked to you about employment prospects. He works at River Bend in Rad Engineering. Sandy Nemecek and I also talked at the CRCPD meeting in Tacoma. I told her about the group of state program directors and federal folks who got the NAVLAP certification program going for personnel dosimeters. It's a long story, and we can discuss it at some future date if you like. Anyway, we worked on it with Larry Lloyd (MT), myself (LA), Phil Plato (U. of Mich.), Elmer EisenhowerNBS), Greta Ehrlich (NBS), Jan Cusimano (INEL), Gail Schmidt (FDA), Ed Vallario (DOE?), and a bunch of others over the years. Once we hit on NAVLAP, the CRCPD dissolved the task force that was pushing for it. We were looking for what I called "an assurance of reliability." The term got changed, but the goal was the same. Either Larry or I would attend the meetings as observers. Larry is now retired in Helena, and I have 355 more days and counting! {:>) Now, the interesting thing about this is that about 30 years later, my son was involved in getting Gulf States Utilities' TLD system certified by NVLAP, and he didn't kno w that I had ever had anything to do with it. Over the years, a lot of people will take credit for it, but just remember, it was the CRCPD that got it started! Enjoyed the visit, and I'll CULater......
